Repeat Prescriptions
At our practice, we are committed to ensuring a safe and efficient process for managing prescription requests. Please review the following guidelines pertaining to our prescribing policy:
Early Prescription Requests:
- Medications with a One-Month or Longer Supply: Patients are permitted to request repeat prescriptions up to 7 days prior to the depletion of their current supply.
- Essential Medications (e.g., Painkillers): These may be requested up to 3 days in advance to ensure uninterrupted treatment.
Restrictions on Certain Medications:
- Antibiotics and Steroids (including Rescue Packs): These medications cannot be requested through our repeat prescription service. An appointment with a healthcare provider is mandatory for these medications at all times.
Request Methods:
- Telephone Requests: We do not accept prescription requests via telephone.
- Ordering Methods:
- Via Pharmacy: Patients may contact their pharmacy to request medication.
- In-Person: Patients can submit a written request at the surgery or their pharmacy.
- Online: The most convenient method is to order through the NHS app. For further information on using the app, please visit the Madryn House website.
Medication Changes:
- Requests to alter medication dosages or to change medications entirely will not be processed without consultation. An appointment must be scheduled with an appropriate clinician to discuss any modifications to medication.
We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these policies to ensure the safe and timely management of prescriptions.

2 or 3 monthly Prescriptions
We are currently working to switch as many patients to two or three-monthly prescriptions as possible, as we have mentioned in the message on your prescription.
This is to try and reduce your trips to and from the surgery and pharmacy but also to reduce labour and administration time for the surgery and pharmacies and in turn help the NHS cut costs.
Please be aware that we have been given a criteria by the Health Board for suitable patients and added rules of our own for continuity. These are as follows;
Ø 5 items or less. If you have 5 courses of tablets and other items that do not meet the criteria, we will not switch the prescription. It will remain one month. Having one month of some and three months of other items can cause confusion, resulting in running out of medication.
Ø Medication prescribed monthly but in very large quantities.
Ø High cost items.
Ø No controlled drugs.
Ø No antidepressant drugs or other drugs pertaining to the management of mental health conditions.
Ø No inhalers / No nutritional supplements / No Catheters, ostomy or ileostomy products / Insulin, diabetic lancets, testing strips, needles etc/ Dressings / Eye lubricants or artificial tears/ No creams, ointments or gels (these are some examples and there will be more that we have not listed). This is to avoid stocks building up in patients homes as many of these items are not necessarily prescribed on a 28-day basis and last longer than just one month.
Ø No Diabetic Weight Loss Injections (e.g. Mounjaro) or tablets (e.g. Rybelsus). No Libre Sensors. This is to avoid stock shortages within the community.
Ø No opioid pain medication, no paracetamol. However, if you are on 5 or less items, we will still change your monthly items to two or three months but your pain medication will remain the same and will need to be ordered when you require a new supply.
Ø Your prescription will not be changed if a regular ordering pattern has not been established.
Some patients will have been on two or three monthly prescribing for some time now and we are not necessarily seeking patients out to change them back if they do not meet the criteria. However, some may need to be changed back if have a significant number of items on their prescription or if they meet two or more exclusion criteria.
Patients could also be switched back to monthly prescriptions if we identify a significant amount of time past the date they should have been reordered again.
Please ensure that prescriptions are reordered correctly and are not phoned through at the final hour as this may result in switching back to monthly.
We are aware that some households will have one (or more) who is eligible and one (or more) who is not however, please bear in mind that this is also an attempt to cut costs for the NHS.
